Cornelia Parker

Yerba Buena Center for the Arts

Conservation of matter dictates that nothing is ever destroyed, it’s merely transformed into something else. But what does it become? And is there meaning in the transformation? 1997 Turner Prize finalist, British artist Cornelia Parker creates sculptural installations that explore these questions. Her ambitious new work, made from remnants of a Southern Black Baptist church destroyed by arson, will be installed with her acclaimed Mass (Colder Darker Matter), an ethereal, shadowy explosion made from a church with a white denomination that was struck by lightning. Parker’s efforts to exhume and preserve ask us to contemplate racial and religious conflict as well as our own mortality. Developed in partnership with the FOR-SITE Foundation, an artist-in-residency program supporting the creation of new artworks about place.
