In and about the Village: Cutting Edge has cake, eats it

La Jolla Golden Triangle | Wednesday, May 9, 2001 | Nanette

There was a hot time in the lower reaches of the Museum of Contemporary Art when artists, poets, and performers joined for a celebratory dinner after the final segment of Cross Fertilizations-Artists on the Cutting Edge series to revel in the success of their ninth season. Representatives of Bank of America Foundation and the Betlach Family Foundation, sponsers who underwrote it, were pleased, to say the least. And Jane Rice, in the theatrical tradition carried on despite spending the night before in the emergency room. Even her crutches didn't prevent her from climbing and descending stairs all over the museum. Noted UCSD professor George Lewis, recently subject to a lengthy cover story in the Reader, confined himself to 25 words or less after dinner when he urged the community to reinvent itself, expand its mind and make San Diego a place where that kind of transformation can take place. Already scheduled for the tenth anniversary series is Hugh Masakela, noted South African musician.
